The Five-Year Journey: Launching the Marketday Shopping Cart

A Week of Final Touches

 

This week I’ve been on Zoom calls, watching the very first batch of Marketday Carts come together—assembled, packaged, and almost ready to send. At this stage, most of the work is out of my hands, which has given me a little space to pause and reflect.

Some of you may have seen our recent editorial—a beautiful collaboration with the team at Peppermint. It took me right back to that first spark of the idea: our why, and inevitably, our how. It also reminded me just how much time this journey has taken to unfold.

Five Years in the Making

When I tell people it’s been five years, their jaws usually drop. It’s hard to explain exactly where all that time went, but I’ve made peace with it—and here’s why.

Around the two‑year mark, I realised nothing was “going wrong.” Things were simply moving at a pace I wasn’t used to. Slow is not usually my MO. But I came to see that time was a gift, not a curse.

Yes, delays were frustrating. In the moment, they felt like setbacks that might cost us our chance. But looking back, I don’t regret them. Those months—those years—gave me space to think, to strategize, to make decisions (and change my mind).

They gave me room to explore social media from scratch, to research, and to figure out where both the product and I fit in this enormous landscape. At the time, I didn’t even have a personal Instagram account.

Growing With the Cart

Those five years gave me time to truly understand our customer, to study what else was out there, and to redesign the Marketday shopping cart—again and again—until we arrived at the version we’re about to launch.

They gave me perspective on what others in the shopping trolley space were doing, what questions they were asking, and where they found their answers. They also gave me the chance to ask myself: why me, and why now? And along the way, I met countless brilliant people who helped me keep moving, one step at a time.

On the Verge of Launch

Now, here we are. The Marketday Cart is just one week away from arriving on the doorsteps of our very first customers. Time feels like it has slowed again—a final pause before the next chapter begins. And I find myself asking: what can I learn in this moment? How can I use this time well, before the next step comes to life?
