Thinking about the simple things in life

Thinking about the simple things in life

by Michelle Hildebrand

Well, I can’t believe it’s September already!

I was sick for most of August, so September kind of snuck up on me. In our house, it’s birthday season — right in line with the launch of a new season across the planet.

With all the madness happening in the world, sometimes it’s a relief to simply look at what’s right in front of you: our family, our friends, our local community.

Like everyone, I get a very specific kind of thing in my Instagram feed. Lately, I’ve been coming across Mr Skelly.

Mr Skelly is an artist who uses his hands, imagination and talent to make little animations featuring a white skeleton who thinks about the world and bares his soul. No AI in sight.

One of the things I love about him is his take on living. He’s not interested in making life easier, more efficient or perfectly optimised. He believes the point of life is to live it.

Why would we hand that responsibility — and all those little decisions — over to machines?

He’d rather spend a whole life being terrible at things he loves than be perfect at something he doesn’t care about.

I love this because it makes me think about the simple things in life. The good and the bad. Great times with family. Awkward conversations with someone you haven’t seen in a while. Being able to do something nice for someone, and sometimes needing help from those same people yourself.

Simply living, and living simply.

Maybe that’s also why I love the change of seasons. It’s a fresh look at what’s ahead. New weather. New seasonal food. New experiences. A gentle reminder that things change, and that there is always something new to notice.  Our instagram has a carousel on What's in Season...a little reminder of what's new and fresh at the markets this month.

So, as we head into spring, I hope you can take some time to slow down, look around and enjoy some of the simple pleasures of life. Enjoy the people around you. Notice the little things. Do something you love, even if you’re not very good at it.

There’s plenty of time for everything else.
