What is a market cart?
Essentially, it’s a modern alternative to the shopping trolley.
“Shopping trolley” makes me think of the steel trolleys at the supermarket.
“Granny trolley” has a certain nostalgic charm, but the traditional design feels like a functional misfit for modern life.
But a "market cart" gives me a feeling of possibility.
A market cart is for markets, urban living and everyday tasks that need to be done – and done in style.
It’s a wheeled cart designed to carry groceries, fresh produce and everyday belongings while walking between markets, shops, home and other local destinations.
It’s a simple tool for everyday living that helps you make the most of life right outside your door.
Because when you have shops, markets, cafes, parks and other essentials close by, being able to walk there changes the way you experience your neighbourhood. The right market cart makes carrying everything home, easier – so you can make the most of your community and everything that is close by.
So, what makes a good market cart?
Large wheels for all kinds of surfaces
A good market cart should be able to handle more than aperfectly smooth supermarket floor – from apartment buildings and footpaths, to kerbs, steps and the occasional uneven path.
Multiple baskets or compartments
Keeping things organised is one thing. Keeping things safe is another. Separate baskets help prevent hard, heavy and spiky items from crushing your delicate produce. For a market cart, we’d say two baskets are a minimum, and three is even better.
Easy manoeuvrability
Because running errands shouldn't feel like you're wrestling with your trolley. A good market cart should move easily and feel natural to steer.
A comfortable handle
The handle should work for short, medium and tall people. A longer handle can also give you more room to walk naturally without clipping your heels on the cart.
A lightweight frame
You need to be able to lift your cart when you have to — into the car, up a step or into storage. A cart shouldn't add unnecessary weight to the things you're already carrying.
Easy storage
Can you fold it? Hang it on a wall? Store it in the boot of your car? Tuck it neatly away at home? A good market cart needs to work when you're not actually using it, too.
Durable construction
Nobody wants to buy something they'll need to replace in a year or two. A well-made product should be designed to last, reducing the need to replace it and making better use of the materials and resources that go into making it.
Replaceable parts
This isn't just a nice extra. Being able to replace individual parts rather than an entire product is an important part of making a product last longer.
Protection for fresh produce
If you're buying fruit, vegetables, flowers or other delicate things, this matters. Multiple baskets help separate different kinds of produce, while Marketday's three washable insulated baskets give you flexibility for everything from hard vegetables to delicate fruit.
Easy to clean
Because there's enough to do already. Materials that can be easily removed and washed make a cart much more practical for everyday use.
Suitable for uneven paths
A market cart should give you the confidence to go beyond the supermarket car park — along footpaths, through markets and around your neighbourhood.
A good warranty
A warranty tells you something about how confidently a manufacturer stands behind its product. Look for at least a year, and preferably more.
So, what about the Marketday Cart?
The Marketday Cart does all of this.
It was designed in Australia by a woman who needed a better cart for her weekly market run.
A market cart that didn't just do the job, but looked good doing it.
A market cart that could carry delicate produce without squashing it.
A market cart that was easy to fold, easy to move and made for everyday life.
And, importantly, a market cart designed to last.
